Ecological survey of the PCUK factory site and the Triangle de Leers
The Lille European Metropolis entrusted us with the completion of a fauna-flora-fungi survey to discover the ecological value of the PCUK –Triangle de Leers site and the regulatory constraints. That survey was carried out in case development should be envisaged within the immediate study area. The expert report about the fungi was completed at the Mycological Society for the North of France (the “SMNF”).
The immediate study area is made up of a mosaic of habitats, some of which represent high interest (wetlands) or very high interest (bulrush beds). With regard to the fungi, the SMNF has highlighted the presence of species that are rare and sometimes unknown in the region. The environments that represent an issue are, in particular, the phosphogypsum spoil heap and the wet meadows (and willow stands) to the west of the immediate study area. As for the flora, four heritage species have been observed, one of which is protected in the Nord-Pas de Calais. Several invasive exotic species have also been noted. Concerning the fauna, the issues are concentrated around the breeding birds (medium) and the bats (also medium). Many protected species have been observed.
The objective of the proposed requirements is therefore to avoid any impact on the protected fauna and flora (phasing the works, marking out sensitive areas, monitoring of the worksite by an ecologist, etc.). Other measures have also been recommended in order to improve the site’s ecological quality. Those are recommendations for management (fight against invasive exotic plant species, waste management, etc.) or for monitoring.
