Training on Biodiversity Data Submission

What is biodiversity data submission?

Biodiversity data submission is a critical procedure in the management and preservation of our natural heritage. It refers to the systematic process of gathering, documenting, and storing information related to biodiversity – the complex variety of life on Earth and the countless ways species interact within ecosystems.

These data encompass a wide range of information, including but not limited to, animal and plant species, natural habitats like wetlands, forests, and meadows, protected natural spaces such as nature reserves and national parks, and various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. They also pertain to human activities and their impacts on these biodiversity elements, enabling the monitoring and management of these impacts for sustainable environmental management.

Is the submission of biodiversity data mandatory?

In certain contexts, the submission of biodiversity data can be required. Indeed, when human activities are likely to significantly affect ecosystems, habitats, or protected species, the submission of these data may be necessary to assess and mitigate these impacts. This information is also essential for decisions related to conservation, restoration, and natural resource management.

Learning objectives

At the end of our training, participants will have acquired the necessary skills to understand and implement biodiversity data submission. More specifically, they will be able to:

  • Understand the regulatory framework governing data submission: Understand the various regulations, guidelines, and protocols related to biodiversity data submission, both nationally and internationally.
  • Identify the different tools available: Familiarize yourself with the various tools and systems available for data submission, including databases, standardized file formats, and data transmission tools.
  • Understand the process of data submission and be able to implement it: Discover the key steps in the submission process, from the initial data collection in the field to its submission and use for decision making.

Training duration

The duration of this training is 0.5 day, i.e., 4 hours.

Training program

Our training is carefully designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of biodiversity data submission. The program includes:

  • Regulatory context: A detailed exploration of laws, guidelines, and agreements governing biodiversity data submission. We will discuss the implications of legislation on the collection, storage, sharing, and use of biodiversity data.
  • Presentation of the national data transmission system: An introduction to the systems used for the collection and transmission of biodiversity data at the national level. We will explore the available databases, how they are structured, and how to use them effectively.
  • Presentation of the Standard Data File for Species Occurrence: An overview of the standardized format used to document and share information on different species. We will discuss how these data are collected and coded, and their crucial role in biodiversity conservation.
  • Implementation of legal deposit of biodiversity data (case study): An opportunity to put into practice the skills acquired during the training. Participants will be guided through a real scenario of biodiversity data submission, enabling them to understand and master the process.

Our training sessions

The training will be delivered via video conference, with sessions scheduled in the morning:

  • April 19, 2023
  • September 20, 2023
